Rundown: 2/17 – 2/19

18 Feb

Sweet Zombie Baby Jesus do we ever have a packed weekend.

Friday

Diamond Age /  The Flowers of God @ Pastime Tavern

Ordinarily this would easily be our show pick of the night as we have a well-known history of adoring FoG, and we can’t help but heartily recommend this show if you want to go outbut don’t want to be overrun by fanboys or x’d up dancers. A special bonus for those of you smart enough to catch this show: you’ll go home with a free download code for the FoG album and a screen printed poster. Really, who would hate on that?

Robyn / Diamond Rings / Natalia Kills @ South Side Music Hall

I’m very thankful for the Dallas Voice helping bring this dance party to Dallas tonight as this is easily the show of the weekend for me. Expect to dance, expect to drink and expect to be blown away by someone who is head and shoulders above her lesser contemporaries.

Sebadoh / Quasi @ Granada

Have you guys noticed that Jess is a little excited for this show? (Jesseca’s note: Yes, yes I am.)

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals /  Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights @ HoB

Expect lots of 30-somethings rocking out to “their type” of music. I’m not sure what that means, but I overheard this while at a shitty bar in Lewisville.

Babar / Two Knights @ The Hydrant

This is being billed as a “cuddle” party; that’s the twee-est thing to ever twee.

Beth Orton @ Dan’s

meh. (Jesseca’s note: Not meh. Not meh at all. The opposite of meh, in fact.)

Saturday

Ty Segall / A Giant Dog @ RGRS

A Giant Dog is getting a lot of press around Austin right now and when you take a listen to their brand  indie-punk you can see why critics and kids alike are all over them. Should be a good time. Also, it seems this is band #123567665453 that Orville is in.

Swans / Wooden Wand @ South Side Music Hall

This is the polar opposite of what’s happening in this venue on Friday night.

Mixmaster Mike @ Granada

Sadly he will be sans 3MCs, but you should expect a good show nonetheless.

Tapes ‘n Tapes @ Good Records

This is free at 3 and will supposedly have a keg and food … party.

Tapes ‘n Tapes @ The Loft

I rather liked The Loon, I liked Walk It Off, hell I’ve even been defending Outside but it’s getting to a point where having to defend a band over & over just because they’ve fallen out of the hypecycle has become exhausting. I think from now on, instead of discussing it I’m just gonna put on “10 Gallon Ascot” and walk away.

Broken Social Scene / Zeus @ HoB

I really wish this was at a different venue.

Sundress / Spooky Folk / The Hannah Barbarians / Retro Run / The Western Skies @ Hailey’s

The Others / Collick @ 1921 Hemphill

Rundown: 2/8/11

Smith Westerns / Yuck / Sunset @ The Loft

Unfortunately we were unable to cover Yuck in the last few weeks and really it’s a shame as the bands pitch perfect take of the best of what was on college radio around 1994 or so has really won me over. This is obviously the show of the night as the Smith Westerns hit town after winning more than a few fans with their earlier shows in Denton and Dallas and with a new album that we kind of love. Hopefully the people arrive early enough to catch Sunset and Yuck and those bands are able to find a foothold like SW did.

The O’s @ Good Records

Have you seen the flooding that The O’s fans have been doing over at Magnet magazine? That’s grassroots marketing at it’s best/worst people.

Psychic Soundsystem with Redsean / Blake Ward / Pete Freedman@ Bar Celine

LAPTOPS!

Land Mammals / Paul Slavens / Sam Robertson @ Dan’s Silverleaf

Can someone tell me why Land Mammals are the headliner and not one of Denton’s true treasures? Yeah they have that one guitar player that’s friends with everyone, but that’s pretty much all you can say for the band.

Singles Going Steady @ RGRS

Rundown: 2/7/11

Super Bowl

Rundown: 2/3/11

3 Feb

You havent gotten a Rundown this week due to nothing going on Monday, Freeze # 1 on Tuesday and Freeze # 2 yesterday. Well, it seems tonight people plan on trudging through and attempting to survive going out, having a drink, seeing some music and then driving home on slick roads as Freeze #3 is promised to hit our area. Please be safe if you going out, having a good time is one thing, being foolish is something else.

Spune Presents Grammy Award Winning Pianist George Winston @ The Museum of Modern Art in Ft. Worth

Ladies & Gentlemen, this is as different a show as you can get in this mad, mad Super Bowl world.

Deep Snapper / The Red 100’s / Soviet @ RGRS

Soviet seems to be getting quite a bit of attention locally, and whether that’s just another example of the dreaded local “cycle” kicking in, or just an example of yet another solid local act seeing their hard work pay off is up for debate (one that you could settle for yourself by taking a look at the band’s bandcamp, for the record we dig it.)

Now as for the other two bands on this bill, Deep Snapper is hands down one of the hardest working and best bands in the area, they deserve every bit of praise they get. Now, for the other other band on this bill, well you have to at least admire the chutzpah of The Red 100’s a band who have self-proclaimed themselves able to save rock’n’roll, gotta give them credit believing in themselves. though it’s easy to see that the other bands on this bill deserve better support.

The Flaming Lips / Neon Indian @ South Side Music Hall

For $45 bucks and a pretty dangerous drive you can attend the best Super Bowl event around.

Seryn / Monahans @ Locharann’s

This is Seryn’s 83rd release show of the last two weeks a feat only topped by New Science Project’s 92 shows.

Kid Rock / Duran Duran / Jason Derulo @ Verizon

Is this event sponsored by Red Stag? Red Stag: It taste like Kentucky Deluxe, but we charge $10 bucks extra because you love “BAWITDABA”.

Western Skies / The Unlikely Candidates / Tigers @ Andy’s
