Rundown: 6/29/10

29 Jun

WeDentonDoIt presents: Julian Lynch / Sundress / Soft Healer / Goldilocks and The Rock @ J&J’s

Oh snap, best new music in a dark and sweaty basement, this should be fun. (that was not sarcastic)

Adam Arcuragi / The County Lines / The England Ramaband / Hard Times @ RGRS

It seems like some variation of this lineup pops up every few months for a show, and that’s not a bad thing. The highlight here is Hard Times who give you exactly what you’d expect form a band with that name, namely a rollicking, witty 15 minute set of breakneck paced punk rock.

DJ Pound Me @ the Double Wide

This has to be the worst DJ name in the area.

Rundown:7/20 to 7/26

20 Jul

I can’t believe they’re letting Martellus Bennett host the DOMAs, it’s a slightly worse idea then CGI Guinea Pigs who fight terrorist. Really anyone who has paid attention to this guys exploits on the net over the last year knows that this is a disaster waiting to happen. In fact let’s set some odds for what he might end up doing

Forget he’s only getting to do this because he get’s paid to play a kids game: 1-2

Mispronounce one of the band names:even

Say something incredulous that shows he’s sort of oblivious to the sacrifices of his forebears: 3-1

Unknowingly insult the guy who’s checks allow him to act like an over sized 12 year old with a brand new copy of “The Complete Chappelle’s Show”: 5-1

Insist he be allowed to perform a freestyle/skit: 5-1

Mispronounce two of the band names: 8-1

Rhyme “Romo” with “Homo”…again: 12-1

Have a clue who any of the performers are: 50-1

I know I sound like an ass for this, but as someone of a similar age, and back ground I feel I can say youth is no excuse for ignorance.

Anyway, time to talk music. It’s abit of a calm week, other then the DOMA’s & our show on Tuesday, and the rather awesome show at the Handsome Kitten on Friday.

Rundown: 7/7 to 7/12

7 Jul

The issue of doing most of the writing for this site is when something comes up I don’t really have anyone to fall back on to get post up, and I’m forced to through random shit up via my phone. Anyway, we’ve got a fairly decent week capped by a free show we’re throwing, and a that little bit of breaking news we had for you on Sunday. Continue reading

Interview: Sabra Laval

11 Jun

(note: The above video is from Sabra’s performance during this years NX35)

It would be a cliche to lump Sabra Laval in with the hundreds of other female musician’s currently plying their trade in the various venues around the country, mainly due to the fact that the DOMA nominee’s music has an air of positivity not usually found on many of today’s albums. Smokey voiced, and ever elegant Ms. Laval has found herself with a bit of standing amongst the Dallas/Denton/Fort Worth music scene, having played a spot on March’s NX35, and finding herself nominated for best female vocalist in the DOMA‘s despite only being active int he area since last summer. A friend and myself caught up with Sabra after her performance at the Annex House for an interview, that was suppose dot be conducted with a palm reader, but ended up being a free flowing conversation fueled by Tecate, and admiration. Rundown: 4/27 to 5/3

27 Apr

At some point I need to realize that copious amounts of drinking are a terrible idea, that always leads to me doing something foolish like getting too hyped to do shots soundtracked by Prince‘s “7”, any and all forms of dancing dancing, or allowing myself to be talked into multiple keg stands. Anyway, my point is we all do embarrassing things from time to time like falling down while dancing, falling down post keg stand, agree to be the opener for Dave Matthews, everyday of Billy Corgan’s life. But, none of that really matters in the grand scheme of things, what matters is that you actually put your self in situations that allow for the chance of embarrassment.

Okay, I admit it, I’m just making an excuse for this.

Anyway, we’ve got another decent week round these parts with a hipsterpolooza going down on Monday and a steady build to the rest of the week, to a what looks like a pretty decent weekend. We’re putting up two interviews this week(hopefully) and a few other things.

Rundown: 4/6 to 4/12

6 Apr

Ah Opening Day I love you, I don’t want to do anything, just stay home and watch grown men get paid to hit a little ball into play, with the outside chance of seeing it actually leave the field of play. Boring? Yes. Awesome? Sometimes. An excuse to drink at noon on a Monday? Yes, but I never really need an excuse for that. I bring this up because baseball is a signal of summertime, which to me means the summer tours are coming, and much like today’s games signal the beginning of what seems like a never ending season, this weeks round of shows feel like a signal of what is ahead in the coming months.
