Track of the Day: St. Vincent–Marrow

25 Feb

I was listening to St. Vincent on NPR’s World Cafe and, well, this song chose itself, really. “Marrow” is one of my favorite songs from Actor. Annie Clark is a little slice of heaven.

This Twilight thing is getting a little out of control

13 Oct

I have sort of a morbid curiosity towards the pop cultural mammoth that is Twilight. Honestly I’m not sure why, maybe it’s my affinity for gigantic overbearing phenomenons that lead to legions of girls losing their shit for no apparent reason, but this is getting a little out of hand. I’ve seen writers I respect attacked for not thinking things linked to it aren’t the GREATESTTHINGEVER, and it’s unsettling the way they’ve manged to make it such a cash cow.

Case in point, almost every girl I know considers it a guilty pleasure, because “it’s so silly”,and they have to watch it and make fun of it. Preferably with a group of other girls, over drinks, and no men within 3 miles of the room. (This is my favorite girl excuse for liking something terrible, they seem to think it’s perfectly ok to try and pass this lie off, and that we don’t see right through it. They also do this with Gossip Girl, E!, MTV shows, the music in the Top 40 and Tyra Banks.) The hoopla even led to a  Dallas held convention, brilliantly named Twi-Con, that charged upwards of $150 dollars, so attendees could hobnob with movie star look-a-likes, and the hand model from the books. Really that’s an offensively gross money grab, that makes the Oklahoma land grab deals look quaint.
(Though  it led to a great writing day for us where we made up fake Con panels and posted them to Twitter throughout the day. My personal favorite was “So you’re a guy, and you read Twilight: Why your father can’t look you in the eye.”)

The pandemonium surrounding it has even lead to a soundtrack that many are saying has the potential to be the album of the year. Ridiculous right? Well, a glance at the track list reads like a who’s who of indie rock, seriously take a look. Continue reading

The Week in Music 6/15 to 6/21

16 Jun

I’m going to attempt to make this a weekly feature of mp3s from touring artist that are coming through town. the key word is try. You may have noticed that we used to frequently post mp3s in the “Weekly Rundown”, but the decision was made to make this it’s own separate entity in hopes of better showcasing the artists work. Please if you enjoy the music provided make an effort to either go down to your local record shop, or try one of the online retailers (amzon, emusic, itunes) to find the albums for purchase. Rundown: 6/15 to 6/21

15 Jun

You know what’s fun to realize? The fact the the Mavericks had two different opportunities to trade Dirk for Kobe, and passed both times. Now this may just be my continued sour grapes over the Harris trade causing me to mention this, or it could be the fact that I continue to watch the Mavs fail while seeing Kobe continually rising to the highest level of success, and it kind of pisses me off.

Though let’s be honest, there’s no way Dallas fans accept Kobe over their beloved blue eye’d German.

Anyway, whe have one hell of a week of music in the metroplex, let’s take a look at the highlights.

Breakdown: The music of Annie Clark

5 May

I remember very clearly the day I found out about St. Vincent, I was wasting away some late night, after spending too much time, and money in some bar in Houston, sitting around my place having a beer while screwing around online looking for new music, the whole time trying to calculate the amount of sleep I could get before having to be at work at 3, when I saw a photo of a girl sitting amongst foliage looking off in the distance. Ok, usual photo for a musician, depth is added by not having them acknowledge their surroundings, the usual fair you see in a promo photo.

Then I noticed that the girl was from Dallas, and at the time I was foolishly homesick for the town (I hadn’t been there in almost a year at the time) so clicked the first song, “What Me Worry?”, not really sure what to expect. Continue reading
