Rundown: 9/29 to 10/4

28 Sep

This Trees thing annoys me. Really I hate the way it’s being heralded as the savior of Deep Ellum, despite the fact that the bar is catering to the Firewater set by bringing in bands who are sans radio play, and were popular for like a second in about 1998 (Looking directly at you Powerman 5000, and really who would have thought a Ozzfest band would take their name from a Kinks album.). Seriously, there were 4 news stations there covering it’s opening, Vanilla Ice sold out the place, and various media outlets are have continually gone ape shit with coverage of the places exploits.

The fact of the matter is what John Is does with Parade of Flesh is a thousand times more influential to the “scene” down there then anything Trees has done so far. Seriously, the man tirelessly books a wide variety of quality acts in various clubs in the area, and doesn’t get a quarter of the press that shitty bar gets, and that’s a tragedy.

I’m taking this space to thank John for the hard work, Parade of Flesh continues to book some of the top shows in the area, and it’s much appreciated.

Big week around these parts folks, take a look at the shows, and start making plans to go out.

Rundown:7/20 to 7/26

20 Jul

I can’t believe they’re letting Martellus Bennett host the DOMAs, it’s a slightly worse idea then CGI Guinea Pigs who fight terrorist. Really anyone who has paid attention to this guys exploits on the net over the last year knows that this is a disaster waiting to happen. In fact let’s set some odds for what he might end up doing

Forget he’s only getting to do this because he get’s paid to play a kids game: 1-2

Mispronounce one of the band names:even

Say something incredulous that shows he’s sort of oblivious to the sacrifices of his forebears: 3-1

Unknowingly insult the guy who’s checks allow him to act like an over sized 12 year old with a brand new copy of “The Complete Chappelle’s Show”: 5-1

Insist he be allowed to perform a freestyle/skit: 5-1

Mispronounce two of the band names: 8-1

Rhyme “Romo” with “Homo”…again: 12-1

Have a clue who any of the performers are: 50-1

I know I sound like an ass for this, but as someone of a similar age, and back ground I feel I can say youth is no excuse for ignorance.

Anyway, time to talk music. It’s abit of a calm week, other then the DOMA’s & our show on Tuesday, and the rather awesome show at the Handsome Kitten on Friday.

Rundown: 7/7 to 7/12

7 Jul

The issue of doing most of the writing for this site is when something comes up I don’t really have anyone to fall back on to get post up, and I’m forced to through random shit up via my phone. Anyway, we’ve got a fairly decent week capped by a free show we’re throwing, and a that little bit of breaking news we had for you on Sunday. Continue reading

Announcing the second DayBowBow Presents show

20 May

Thursday, May 28th at the Lounge on Elm St. we have Quick nominee Matthew & the Arrogant Sea headlining what we hope to be a pretty big show. This Old House, Western Giants and Kirby Brown are set to open, and if you pay any attention to this site, you know how deeply we feel about these bands. It’s $5 for you people that can drink, and $10 for those of you who aren’t old enough to.

We’d appreciate it if you guys come out, and have a good time with us. And, as per usual, my find me and get a beer policy is going to be in affect.

Debut: Western Giants album artwork

28 Apr

Western Giants started as a semester project for front man Kennon Talley, and eventually evolved into a full band content on exploring the early foundation Talley laid. While they’re currently at work on mixing their EP, which is due to be released May 28th, Kennon was nice enough to let me have a look at the album artwork, and I decided to share it with ya’ll. You can hear a few tracks over at their myspace, that sound like a weird amalgamation of  Sun Kil Moon‘s darker tracks & “Brass Buttons” era Gram Parsons.

Western Giants play May 21st at J&J’s Pizza, and starts a tour with This Old House on May 28th with a show at The Lounge on Elm Street.

Rundown: 4/20 to 4/26

20 Apr

I’m not one to complain about the opportunity to see some quality live music, but doesn’t it feel like the calender has been rather hectic since NX35? It’s been one big touring act after another, and countless quality local fare almost every night for over a month now. Like I said, far be it for me to complain about actually having things I want to see, especially when there can be some pretty bleak times around these parts, but man I’m fucking broke. Anyway, this week is loaded yet again with quality and quantity, take a look after the cut. Continue reading
