Top 10 of 2010: Jaime’s list

9 Dec

Lord, it’s that time of year, where we all get together and argue constantly about what we liked, loved and kind of hated, and as usual all of our opinions are all over the place. So we’re each taking the time to make our own list of what we consider the top albums of the year. We hope you enjoy, agree, disagree, and most of all listen. Continue reading

Track of the Day: Menomena – TAOS

21 Jul
(Note: Due to the sheer number of submissions we receive, there is no way we can give each and every album the attention (and word count) it deserves, but we can devote time to at least one song from each. So we started this feature to give worthy bands and their music a spot to shine. We hope this helps you discover new and exciting acts, and as always if you enjoy the music please make an attempt to support the artists by either attending a show or buying a record.)

We’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of Menomena‘s Mines for sometime, the Portland trio took their game to new heights with 2007’s Friend and Foe, an album I have yet to stop listening to on a weekly basis, and have found themselves heralded as one of the most exciting bands around.

Menomena – Taos

Verdict: This densly produced track shows us what’s at the heart of the best Menomena songs, namely intricately laden instrumentals topped off by lyrics as heady as anything put out by Chris Nolan in the theater. Immediately exciting in the first few seconds, “TAOS”, sees the band following the formula of their great track “Wet & Rusting” by plunging the listener head first into a sea of noise, then drawing them back with a mid tempo bridge, before nearly drowning us in sound with another darker, and louder plunge. Simply put it’s excellent.

You can listen to the whole album over at NPR and pick up a copy of the album on July 27th.

Month of Lists: Top 7 Take Away Shows

1 Dec

Announcement: December is the month of lists!

You might be asking yourself, “What the hell?” right about now, and honestly our excuse isn’t that great, but we’ll give you one anyway.

Seems to be that people love lists, it’s one of their favorite things to skim, and one of the lazy writers favorite ways to churn out some material. So, in honor of the decade ending we’ve decided to do a list every day of this month. Now what will these consist of? Well, along with the usual “Best of the Decade” list, and “Best of the year” list, we’re going to provide you with list as esoteric as “Top 5 things I can’t believe I thought looked good this decade”, and “Top 6 songs I can’t believe they played in this random store”. So, enjoy the lists. Hopefully they help you pass the time during the slow holiday season.

Top 7 Take Away Shows

7. Fleet Foxes- Blue Ridge Mountains

No on has quite taken advantage of youtube’s ability to showcase idyllic slices of music and video quite like the guys from La Blogotheque. As they have taken touring bands through Paris on adventures of music, viewers have been captivated by what the cameras have captured. And nothing quite illustrates the earnestness of the series like the latest video, which sees the young men from Fleet Foxes plying their trade in the city of lights, including a section of them singing in the Grand Palais.
