Track of the Day: The Pillows–Ride on Shooting Star

At the risk of ruining my reputation as a cool music blogger … Oh, never mind. Nobody thinks I’m cool. So I’m ruining nothing here. Anyway, today’s track is the opening theme from FLCL, a popular Japanese animated show from 2000 that I recently started watching. And, no, it’s not the only anime that I watch, although I am relatively new to the genre. But that’s not the point …

The point is that Japanese artists make some of the finest pop music out there–Cornelius (who, along with Beck, recently contributed “Katayanagi Twins vs. Sex Bob-Omb” to the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack), Pizzicato 5, Takako Minekawa, Cibo Matto (RIP), Fantastic Plastic Machine … I’m just scratching the surface …

The Pillows are another example of a brilliant Japanese pop band. They have a career that spans 21 years, but FLCL really set their career off. Though not all of their songs are classics, when they’re at their best they take well-worn genres–pop-punk, Americana, nerd rock, etc.–and make them sound new and even a little futuristic.

And their videos are fun to watch and often have child-like or silly themes. This video, for example, features teddy bears, goofy glasses, hairstyle changes and rhyming T-shirts. Continue reading
