Rundown: 8/18

18 Aug

Western Giants/Dignan/The Young Maths/Babar @ Dan’s

Summer’s almost over. How many more times can you go out on a Wednesday night without worrying about having a hangover during class? This show would probably be worth it anyway, but I’m just sayin’ …

P.S. Western Giants will be playing new tunes and offering up jars of its very own salsa at the merch table!

Track of the Day: Juston Stens and the Get Real Gang–Lonely, Lonely Night

18 Aug

Juston Stens is a multi-instrumentalist who was the drummer for Dr. Dog on five of their albums over the span of six years.

His tenacity and ingenuity in that band in particularly energetic shows earned him the praise of his bandmates through the oft-chanted phrase “Juston Stens will never die!” He departed from the band to explore his musical horizons and record his own music.

Today’s track comes from the forthcoming debut EP from  Stens and his newly formed band, The Get Real Gang. It’s due out on August 24th, but Park the Van, Stens’ label, is offering it as a free download for a limited time.

Juston Stens and the Get Real Gang–Lonely, Lonely Night

Verdict: Anyone else think his voice is strikingly similar to Stephin Merritt’s? It’s great layered pop with a nostalgic ambiance you would expect from a musician who played with Dr. Dog for six years. Worth more than just one listen. It may end up being in regular rotation for me.
