Track of the Day: Deer Tick- Sun Street (Katrina & The Waves cover)

(Note: Due to the sheer number of submissions we receive, there is no way we can give each and every album the attention (and word count) it deserves, but we can devote time to at least one song from each. So we started this feature to give worthy bands and their music a spot to shine. We hope this helps you discover new and exciting acts, and as always if you enjoy the music please make an attempt to support the artists by either attending a show or buying a record.)

Fun Story: While on our way down to SXSW this year we stopped at Willie’s Place out of sheer habit, when we found ourselves taking a wrong turn, and ending up in a side bar that none of us had ever seen before. Seems Willie’s has a small bar room that is used almost exclusively for karaoke. Deciding that this was destiny, we decided that we needed to have a beer. About ten minutes later, I took off exploring through the main complex and came face to face with Deer Tick perusing the aisles. Being the fan that I am, I invited the guys to the bar so I could buy them a round. Many drinks later, we found ourselves being forced to sing along to a song I can’t remember as a bunch of truckers cheered us on. This remains my favorite story from this year’s SXSW.

Deer Tick- Sun Street (Katrina & The Waves cover)

Verdict: Deer Tick imbues this cover with their signature sound, a combination of alt-country and lo-fi aesthetic that drastically takes the song away from its bubblegum pop origins and adds a level of gravity to the track. Simply put, it may not be a random bit of karaoke in a Texas legend’s back room bar, but it’ll work.
