We like field trips, and we really like having people freelance. So with that in mind I went to the Planned Parenthood Rock Your Body Politic last Thursday, dragging along an old editor friend of mine in hopes of getting new opinions on things I was ill-equiped to have a valid opinion on. I can tell you about the music, I can go on, and on about how Aaron Eash, of Giggle Party, was as on his game as I’d ever seen him. How he underwent a full transformation on stage, evolving from a quiet and friendly guy, to some type of Carnival Barker/hip-hop hype man hybrid, that worked the crowd into a ruckus, by not only playing his guitar behind his back, but doing so for most of the set. I could tell you how the professional approach Young & Brave took to the stage further cemented my belief that the band is on its way to bigger things. Hell, I could tell you about new Happy Bullet songs, crossdressing Lady GaGa impersonators and how the Girl in the Coma crowd resembled an issue of Love & Rockets.

But, what  I should do is give my old friend, and editor, Ellen Maraccini a spot to share her thoughts on a cause she truly believes in. What follows are her thoughts, and a pretty awesome rant.

January 22, 2010 marked the 37th anniversary of the US Supreme Courts’ decision in the Roe v. Wade case, providing women with the right to choose what happens to their own bodies. The night before, on January 21, 2010, in the spirit of personal choice and freedom, Planned Parenthood of North Texas presented the Rock Your Body Politic Event, encouraging Freedom of Choice Forever.

Founded by Margaret Sanger, Planned Parenthood provides beneficial healthcare to women who would not otherwise receive any, as well as counseling and support, and they believe that “women have the right to decide for themselves when and whether to have a child”. Planned Parenthood is active through 90 affiliates throughout the country, and Planned Parenthood of North Texas alone serves 52 counties, with 29 health centers around North Texas.

Because the state of Texas has the highest percent of uninsured people in the US, for most patients, Planned Parenthood of North Texas is their only healthcare. Today, with women spending 68% more in out-of-pocket healthcare costs than men—with a large part of that due to the high cost of reproductive health-related supplies and services—Planned Parenthood of North Texas is dedicated to prevention and basic healthcare for all women regardless of class, race, or religion.

Thirty-seven years later Planned Parenthood of North Texas is still fighting for women’s rights to choose and encouraging everyone to have a voice and vote, believing that the best way to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies is to make contraception accessible and affordable.

And with anti-choice pharmacies still out there who refuse to fill birth control prescriptions even now, women everywhere, with the help of Planned Parenthood of North Texas, are inspiring everyone to keep fighting for reproductive social justice for women and the Freedom of Choice Forever.

Register to vote and make your voice heard, and visit to find out more about Planned Parenthood of North Texas.

There you go. Also, that rant she had goes a little like this.

Women are a magnificent gender in that we have the ability to create life, further our own species. Because men are threatened by our superior creation abilities, and jealous of our undeniable power over the human race, it is inevitable they will seek to gain control over our right to choose when and whether we want to bear a child. By taking birth control measures, a woman is free to explore her own sexuality as men do, which takes away their “upper hand”.

To weak-willed and scared men, women should still be timid and naïve when it comes to sex—it’s less intimidating when the woman is a virgin, less of a change of his manhood being challenged if they’ve never known anything better. It takes a strong man to accept an equally experienced and unabashed woman who has just as much of a sexual appetite and prowess as he.

Because, let’s face it, men like to try to use sex as a weapon. They claim it is us who do that by depriving them of it, but in reality they are the manipulators. If a woman doesn’t give her man enough sex it automatically gives him the right to cheat, it gives him an excuse and the piece of mind he needs to justify sating his “animalistic appetite”. But if women began commanding men to satisfy them with sex when and how much we wanted…we’d be called sluts…nymphos…or freaks…

Names like those are just more tools the male gender uses on a constant basis to keep the female gender down. And this is bigger than just race, bigger than religion or ethnicity…this is about mankind’s ploy to bring down womankind because they are scared of us. They know we have the power, deep down they know our potential, but they can’t admit that when it comes down to it the world has always been secretly controlled by women. And it would be a much better place if the men just learned to accept it.

Don’t fear us, don’t feel threatened, we won’t enslave you or anything.

We just want out cut.

We want our birthright—the right to be strong and powerful and confident, too, and not to be hated for it. We don’t even want to be better than men, we’re smart enough to recognize that both genders really are equally important and powerful in their own right, we just ask that men recognize that equality too.

Stop bringing us down just because you think we’ll one day take over the world like you have…just because we have the power doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll use it.

The same goes for the face that just because we have the power to create life doesn’t mean we necessarily want to use it at times. We deserve the right to be as sexually open and free as men.

No longer will we be tricked into motherhood and slavery before we are ready—or at all if we choose—no longer will man try to insist we carry their seed for nine months if we don’t want to…

No longer will the female gender play nice!

We ARE in control and, most importantly, we WILL BE in control of our own bodies and our own sexuality. Men won’t be able to tell us what to do—and more to the point, what NOT to do—any longer.

Rise up my sisters and DEMAND equality…DEMAND power to do what YOU want to with YOUR body…

DEMAND womankind the respect it DESERVES!!!

Well that about sums it up. Thank you to the bands for giving their time and talent, thank you to the volunteers that made the event happen, and thank you to Planned Parenthood for not only allowing us to attend and cover their event, but for existing.
