Track (s) of the Weekend: Sebadoh–Magnet’s Coil and Ocean (Live at The Gypsy Tea Room 3/18/1999)

18 Feb

As someone who is admittedly not a Sebadoh completist, I might be criticized by more obsessive fans for choosing two of their more well-known songs.

But my reasons for posting “Magnet’s Coil” and “Ocean” over more obscure Sebadoh songs are threefold: (more…)

Giveaway: The Octopus Project presents Hexadecagon at South Side Music Hall

17 Nov

Austin’s The Octopus Project are no strangers to performing in Dallas/Ft. Worth, and they always put on an entertaining show. But tomorrow night’s presentation of their new album, Hexadecagon, in its entirety at Southside Music Hall is sure to blow all of their past DFW performances out of the water.

It’s going to be a concert-in-the-round, with the audience surrounding the band (of course) and speakers and screens surrounding the audience. All that and Wiley Wiggins, too (playing video loops, not acting)!

And you have a shot at seeing this spectacle for free. Just send an email with “The Octopus Project” as the subject and your full name in the body to giveaways@daybowbow.net by tonight at 11:59 p.m. We’ll notify the winner tomorrow. If you don’t win the tickets, you can still grab some for $17.

The Octopus Project plays The Southside Music Hall on Thursday, November 18 with support from Jacob Borshard and New Fumes. Doors are at 7:30.

Giveaway: Freelance Whales at The Loft

10 Nov

Monday afternoon, on the drive back from Austin, I listened to a Freelance Whales session that was featured on World Cafe on KXT.

I had never listened to the band, although I knew there was recent buzz around them. But they were captivating, and I can only imagine what they’re like in person. It made me even more eager to post this giveaway for a pair of tickets to their show at The Loft on Friday.

To enter, send an email with “Freelance Whales” in the subject line and your full name in the body to giveaways@daybowbow.net by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. The winner will be notified on Friday.

Freelance Whales play the Loft on Friday, November 12, with openers Miniature Tigers and Generationals. Tickets are 12 bucks.

Giveaway: Dr. Dog at South Side Music Hall

9 Nov

Today we have a pair of tickets for one lucky reader to see Dr. Dog at South Side Music Hall on Thursday. I must say that, even after a weekend packed with live shows and late nights, I’m very excited about this show. I’ve never had the chance to see Dr. Dog live and I’ve heard only great things. And South Side Music Hall is quickly becoming one of my favorite venues in Dallas.

For your chance to win the tickets, send an email with “Dr. Dog” in the subject line, your name and the answer to the (very easy) trivia question below to giveaways@daybowbow.net by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. We’ll notify the winner on Thursday.

Question: What is name of the former Dr. Dog drummer whose first single we reviewed a few months ago?

Dr. Dog plays South Side Music Hall on Thursday, November 11 with openers Here We Go Magic. Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 the day of the show.

Giveaway: We Are Scientists at The Loft

25 Oct

This week we have a couple of giveaways for you. We’ll announce one of them in a day or two, but for today we have a pair of tickets to We Are Scientists at The Loft tomorrow night (October 26).

Honestly, I don’t know a lot about We Are Scientists, except that they’re big in the UK and they sent me a Myspace request about five years ago. I thought their music was fun back then, and what I’ve heard of their recent album, Barbara, is equally good. Opening acts Twin Tigerswhom I interviewed last year during Fun Fun Fun Fest–and Rewards (aka Aaron Pfenning, formerly of Chairlift) should add a bit of diversity to the bill.

If you want tickets, just email us at giveaways@daybowbow.net by 11:59 p.m. We’ll notify the winners early tomorrow. And if you don’t win, you can stillbuy tickets for 12 bucks.

Giveaway–The Vaselines at The Loft

14 Oct

I’m going to be frank here–I almost forgot to post this giveaway, not because The Vaselines aren’t awesome (in fact, I admitted they are a couple of months ago), but because I’ve had a bad couple of weeks. But nobody cares about that. And I’m hoping seeing The Vaselines will fix it.

If you want to improve a bad week, or make a great one even better, you can enter to win two tickets to see The Vaselines on Friday at The Loft.

Just send an email to giveaways@daybowbow.net by 11:59 p.m. tonight.

The Vaselines play The Loft on Friday, October 15 with opener Jeffrey Lewis. Tickets are $16 in advance and $18 on the day of the show.

Giveaway: School of Seven Bells at Hailey’s

5 Oct

Hey, kids. I hope you’ve enjoyed our recent influx of free tickets. Or I guess that would be an efflux since we aren’t keeping them … Anyway, this week we have a pair of tickets to see School of Seven Bells at Hailey’s on Friday, October 8, from our generous pals at Vagrant. I’ve written two Tracks of the Day on SVIIB this year (and DBB alum Melissa Crowe interviewed Benjamin Curtis exactly a year before the date of the show) and I’m excited to see them for the first time this week.

If you’d also like to see them (for free), just send the title of your favorite SVIIB song, along with your full name, to giveaways@daybowbow.net. Entries must be received by 11:59 tonight and we’ll notify the winner tomorrow.

School of Seven Bells plays Hailey’s on Friday with openers Active Child and Eyes and Ears. The show starts at 10 and tickets are $12 for over 21 and $14 for under 21.

Giveaway: Field Music @ The Loft

28 Sep

England’s Field Music will be playing Thursday night at The Loft, and we have a couple of tickets courtesy of the venue. This time around, I’m not going to make you answer a trivia question. We’re going to randomly select a winner this time. Just send your name (first and last so you can get on the list, kiddies) to giveaways@daybowbow.net by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m.

And if you’re not the lucky winner, you can buy tickets for around $12 with fees here. Monahan’s will open for Field Music. The show starts at around 8:30.
